Farm Update - 12-12-18

What a year 2018 has been for the farm! We continue to be shocked at how well the farm is growing and thank every one of you that have purchased from us, told someone about us or lent a hand on the farm. We could not do this without you!

We sold every single bag of dried peppers from our first year of offering them. Getting on eBay was huge for us and we have shipped all over the country now, sending off to our 24th different state last week. It's so crazy to think that people in California, Washington, New Jersey and Michigan want some peppers from a little farm in Tennessee. We recently opened an Etsy Store to offer customers another purchasing option and reach a new audience.

Bowl of dried Trinidad Scorpion peppers.

The growing season was super busy, partly due to the increase in the number of plants and programs we had, but also partly due to us installing new things on the farm to help us do things faster and easier. We added metal fencing to trellis tomatoes, cucumbers, sunflowers and luffas, and transitioned most of our wooden posts to metal posts. We made tunnels for our beans, cabbage, potatoes and kohlrabi to keep both the deer away with netting and the insects at bay with row covers. All these things took time, effort and money, but they will pay off greatly in the long run. We also managed to purchase some new tools during the season and a full-size tiller at the end of the year. We are so pumped to have a big tiller as it will greatly cut down on bed preparation time next season.

Some of our Sunflowers from the summer.

Our harvest was really good this year. We had a really wet Spring followed by a hot, sunny Summer. While temps never got extremely high, the constant sun did take its toll on the plants. We were really happy with how everything produced. We lost the majority of our hot pepper plants right after planting when heavy rains flooded our area about three times in a one-week period, but those that did survive made us plenty of peppers. We also had good production out of our sweet potatoes, black beans, cucumbers and peanuts.

Peppers continue to be our most requested item and bring in the vast majority of the income that keeps the farm going and growing so we are going to shift more focus onto the peppers for next year. We will attempt to plant that same number of hot peppers again, just hopefully without flooding this time! We plan to add a few new varieties in 2019. On the sweet side of things, we will add another Italian fryer in Mama Mia Giallo to go with our staples, Carmen and Escamillo. Biscayne will be joined by Nassau, another sweet Cubanelle variety. And we will have a variety of massive Bell peppers. For hot peppers, look for Red Devil's Tongue, Scotch Bonnet, new Cayenne and Habanero varieties, and the Naga Viper to be on the farm. We will also try White and Yellow Ghost peppers again, and work on more production of the Moruga variety of the Trinidad Scorpion. We will also add the third hottest pepper in the world to our arsenal with the 7 Pot Douglah.

We trialed out the Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA) Program this year. While it was a success, we will not continue it in 2019. It is a lot of work to keep up with and most of the poeple interested in our program live a long way from us. With us juggling real jobs and running the farm, meeting up with everyone involved in the program was quite difficult. We will still prepare custom orders for anyone that wants them, but the prepaid CSA program will not continue. Thanks to everyone who helped us with the trail this year and we hope you enjoyed the selection of veggies and products we provided.

We will also be ending the Roadside Stand. We had to stop it early this year due to lack of produce available, but overall we had less people stopping and it just isn't worth the time to pack things up, drive over, set up, sit there, then move it all back to the farm. We do plan to still have occasional Veggie Sales at the farm and set up at local events like yard sales and sporting events when we have enough produce and time to justify it.

A table at the Roadside Stand

Shannon produced her Pickles again this year and they continue to be very popular here locally. We haven't sold any online as shipping is a bit high to ship fragile, quart-sized glass jars. With USPS shipping prices set to increase again in January 2019, things may get even worse. As always, you can purchase them from the farm for $5 a jar. We still have quite a few jars left as we canned plenty this year while our cucumbers were producing in full force.

Canned pickles ready to eat!

Shannon also added Jellies in the early Spring, followed a few weeks later by fruity Jams. It was a good choice! Not only did we get to eat plenty of tasty spreads here on the farm, but we sold quite a few as well. That helped with costs of the expansion and also got our name out to new parts of the country. We have had numerous people asking for more varieties and coming back to purchase more, so we plan to keep the canned items going into 2019. We have added Christmas Jam, Pineapple-Mango Habanero Jam and Cranberry-Banana Jam over the past few weeks. We are getting the violets and dandelions ready for more jelly to be made in March and April. Those two unique jellies were a huge hit this year.

The last thing we want to mention is our progress on eliminating pesticides on the farm. It has been our goal since the very beginning. We hope to be able to produce all of our veggies without any pesticide, even all-natural ones. We want to provide the cleanest produce we can because that's how it should be. Moving to insect barriers and netting has helped on a lot of our plants. We are also more diligent about manually removing bugs from crops before they become an infestation. We used about 75% less pesticides in 2018 as compared to 2017. About 75% of our crops are completely pesticide-free and grown completely organic. Of the other 25%, about 50% were treated with natural pesticides. The non-natural pesticides were applied to some of our peppers and tomatoes this year out of necessity as we were losing to the worms, but we were able to keep it at just one application compared to 6-10 applications in previous years. We think we can completely cut out pesticide use in the near future. We are almost there!

Thanks again for visiting the page, keeping up with our updates and supporting the farm! We love doing it and hope that at some point we have provided you with something that put a smile on your face. Look for some changes to the website coming soon as we find our focus on where the farm is going. More updates to follow as the winter progresses and we watch our winter garlic grow!

New Stuff!

We have a few new items available for purchase. Grab any of our products on our Ebay page or through our new Etsy Store!

New Jam!
We have another new addition in the Jams & Jellies department. Our latest offering is Cranberry-Banana Jam. It is a unique use of Cranberries, combining them with Bananas to form a delicious fruity spread with a beautiful color. Goes well with the season! Purchase online to have it shipped, or buy it directly from the farm at a discounted rate. Contact us to arrange a pickup. See the Dried/Canned page for more info on our jams and jellies.

New Dried Pepper Options!
We have several new options for our dried peppers. Devil's Tongue is new for us this year and is a very tasty pepper with solid heat that we have in very limited supply. We have also added the 3 Kings Mix of the hottest peppers on the planet! There is a Red/Green Thai mix now available as these peppers are great in both forms. Habaneros are also back in stock! Find out more about each below. See our Dried/Canned page for more on our dried peppers.

Devil's Tongue
This unique pepper is a relative of the Habanero and tips the heat scale near the ratings of the hottest Habaneros like Scotch Bonnet and Red Savina. The pepper is know for a fruity, citrus taste to go with a good burn. As with most peppers, dehydrating the pepper really brings the fruity flavor to the surface. We grew the yellow variety this season and they dried to a beautiful golden color. We have limited supplies of the Devil's Tongue this year so act fast if you want to try this pepper! Available in 0.5 ounce bags containing 18-22 peppers.

3 Kings Mix
A mix of the hottest peppers we have on the farm...which also happen to be the hottest peppers in the world! Grab equal parts of the Carolina Reaper (hottest pepper in the world!), the Trinidad Scorpion (2nd hottest in the world) and the infamous Ghost. The Trinidad Scorpions are a mix of Moruga and Butch T varieties. All of these peppers will light you on fire with Scoville scale ratings of over 1,000,000 units of heat. The Carolina Reaper and Moruga Scorpion are each above 2,000,000 heat units! All three pack flavor beneath the immense heat. Using them dry is the best way to find the flavor and getting this mixed bag is the best way to try them all! They are available in 1 ounce bags containing 28-35 peppers.

Thai Red/Green Mix
Our tasty Thai peppers are now available in a Red/Green Mix in addition to the all-red offerings we have previously sold. Thai peppers are one of only a few peppers that are just as good green as they are mature red. Both colors pack strong flavor and plenty of heat. They rank slightly hotter than the typical Cayenne. These peppers come from the very end of our growing season so they are the freshest peppers we have available! Great for pepper flakes and adding to Asian dishes. The Red/Green Mix is available only in 2 ounce bags and in limited supply.

Habaneros
One of our staples is back in stock! Grab our tasty Habaneros in a mix of Red and Orange, or get them separately. The red variety we grow is Hot Paper Lantern. The orange one is Helios, our favorite Habanero to date. It dries to a beautiful golden color. Both pack a punch of citrus flavor and heat, with their heat rating being near the top of what Habaneros can produce. Try them both in the mix!

Dried Peppers

Our dried peppers are now available! We collect our final loads of the season and dehydrate them to make our popular dried pepper varieties. Cayenne, Anaheim Chili and Trinidad Scorpion peppers are back. We have also added Thai, Thairano, Ghost and Carolina Reaper options for this year. Read about each variety below. Look for Habanero, Devil's Tongue, Green Chili mixes and a 3 Kings mix (Ghost/Scorpion/Reaper) to be available soon.

The peppers come in a vacuum-sealed bag and can last six months if stored properly. We recommend storing them in an airtight container such as a canning jar once the bag is opened to help them stay dry and crisp for longer.

To purchase, contact us or visit our Ebay Store. We offer pick-up from the farm and shipping options. We can ship to anywhere in the U.S. Price depends on customer location. Payment can be made in cash, or through PayPal or Zelle.

We sold out last year so don't wait to make your order! Visit the Dried/Canned page for more info.

Anaheim Chili Peppers - 2 ounces - $4
                                          4 ounces - $7
Dried mix of red and green Anaheim Chili peppers. This is our mildest offering as far as heat goes. No pesticides or chemicals were used on these peppers during any stage of the growing or packaging process. Perfect for making your own red pepper flakes. The two ounce bag contains about 8-12 large peppers.

Carolina Reaper Peppers - 1 ounce - $11
                                              2 ounces - $19
The hottest pepper in the world is here at Sweetwater Farms! We began growing the Carolina Reaper this year and can attest to the fact that they are truly the hottest peppers around! Reapers can reach 2,200,000 Scoville units of heat, which is 200 times hotter than a Jalapeno! Drying brings out the flavor that otherwise goes unnoticed beneath all the heat. Use their flavor and heat to bring your favorite recipes up a notch. Discard the seeds to take a little of the edge off the heat. The two ounce bag contains 70-80 peppers.

Cayenne Peppers - 2 ounces - $4
                                 4 ounces - $7
Dried mix of two types of Cayennes for size and flavor variety. Both are similar in heat. Also great for making red pepper flakes. No pesticides or chemicals were used on these peppers during any stage of the growing or packaging process.

Ghost Peppers (Bhut Jolokia) - 1 ounce - $6
                                                      2 ounces - $11
Dried bag of red ghost peppers for those that like it hot! Drying the peppers brings out more of the citrus flavor that comes from their Habanero background and also concentrates the heat. Discard the seeds to cool them down a bit. The two ounce bag contains 50-60 peppers.

Thai Peppers - 2 ounces - $4
                          4 ounces - $7
Thai peppers bring the flavor and the heat! Rating around 100,000 Scoville units of heat, Thai peppers are hotter than Cayennes, but bring more of the sweet flavor that is brought out during the dehydrating process. These peppers are our farm favorite for the flavor-heat combo. Great for adding to soups or Asian dishes. Two ounces is 80-90 peppers

Thairano Peppers (Thai-Serrano Hybrid) - 2 ounces - $4
                                                                       4 ounces - $7
Hybrid pepper that packs the flavor of both the Serrano and Thai! This pepper is very unique and new to the farm. The Thairano peppers come in two different shapes, either short and round, or long and thinner like a Cayenne. These bags contain a mix of both shapes. The heat is mild compared to our other offerings. The two ounce bag contains 40-50 peppers.

Trinidad Scorpion Peppers - 1 ounce - $11
                                                 2 ounce - $19
Dried bag of the second hottest peppers in the world. Our Scorpions are a mix of the Moruga and Butch T varieties. Drying the peppers brings out their citrus flavor that is usually hidden behind the fire. Discard the seeds to reduce the heat. The two ounce bag contains 70-80 peppers.

Hot Pepper Update

Our hot peppers are out in full force! We have several new varieties this year, including the milder Thairano (hybrid of Thai and Serrano), medium Thai, Devil's Tongue, and the really hot Carolina Reaper. We also have our staples again this year in the Trinidad Scorpion, Ghost Bhut Jolokia, Habaneros, Cayennes, Poblanos and Jalapenos. They will all be available fresh until the first frost, which might be soon looking at the forecast, and many will be available dried as well.

We also have a few Anaheim Chilis. The chilis struggled a lot this year. Most of the peppers were very slow growing for the Summer, but all have caught up and producing plenty with the exception of the Anaheims.

Most of our peppers are going into Uncle Paul's Pepper Powder, made right here in middle Tennessee. Paul has a new mix this year called Dragon Fire, which features Ghost, Scorpion and Reaper peppers. If you would like to try some of his mixes let us know and we can put you in contact with him. It is great stuff! Excellent flavor with a good bite of heat.

As always, contact us with any of your pepper needs. We can offer them fresh or dried and ship most of our products nationwide. If you are in need of larger quantities like Uncle Paul uses, please contact us with your needs for next year as we are looking to expand the hot pepper program.

Succulent Pots

We have worked on growing a few succulents this spring. They are in small post, perfect for sitting indoors in a sunny window. Succulents are nice and green, while requiring little maintenance. They don't need much water and can survive some harsh conditions making them perfect for the person who occasionally forgets about their plants!

Our smaller succulent pot looks like a small coffee or tea mug and sells for $3.

The larger one is a black pot for $5.

The post are available for purchase by contacting us through this page, or by coming by our Roadside Stand or Veggie Sale.

Veggie Sale & Opening of the Roadside Stand

This past weekend's Veggie Sale was a success! We had many visitors. Friday was the single biggest day of sales we have had when not combined with another event such as a yard sale. We are so grateful to everyone that stopped by and purchased something. You all are helping support our little farm! Look for Veggie Sales about once per month the rest of the summer. Watch our Facebook page for dates and times. More info about the Veggie Sale is on the Roadside Stand page.

The Roadside Stand also opened for the first time on Friday afternoon. Traffic was a bit slow, but we did make a few sales. We plan to open it Friday afternoon this summer, and maybe a few other weekday afternoon as well. Watch Facebook for updates on dates and times.

We also handed out our first CSA orders. All July allotments have been distributed. They contained various mixes of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, squash, onions, bell peppers, biscayne peppers, jalapeno peppers, green and yellow beans, cucumbers and more! Look for your next batch in the middle of August! We might even throw in some jam next month!

Soldier Worms Are Back!

We have sufficiently increased the numbers of our Soldier Fly Grubs to be able to offer them for sale again. They are currently eating our veggie waste and turning it into compost. We are only selling smaller quantities at this time. You can get 50 grubs for $3 or 100 for $5. These quantities are not sufficient for jump-starting your compost, but work great for fishing bait or feeder worms for your pets. Check out the Soldier Grubs page for more info.

Sunflower Bouquets

We will occasionally have sunflower bouquets for purchase. We sold out of our first round very quickly, but will have more as our flowers reproduce and continue to grow this summer. We hope to have more flowers for variety in the future as we are currently building up our stock around the farm. Price will be dependent on size. Check the Currently Available post to see when the bouquets are available.

CSA Sign-Up Ends Today

Today is the final day to sign up for the CSA Program. We have just two spots remaining! For $80 you will be guaranteed to get one load of veggies per month for four months (July, August, September and October). Each load will contain at least $20 worth of our fresh vegetables. The orders will vary in what they contain. You will get whatever is in season at that time, including bell peppers, tomatoes, green beens, squash, cucumbers and more!

Find out more specifics at the CSA page. Contact us to register for the program. Payment needs to be received by the end of the weekend. You can pay in cash, or through PayPal or Zelle. Shipping is not available for the CSA as the process of shipping does not keep these veggies up to our quality standards. You can pick up you order each month from the farm directly, at the Roadside Stand on Friday afternoons, or we can deliver it to local addresses for a fee. Contact us with any questions you might have!

Farm Update 6-29-18

We are now into the summer veggie season. Things are busy on the farm, but we wanted to stop a minute and update everyone on the farm's progress over the past few months.

The winter growing season didn't go quite as planned. The cold temperatures came in early and were brutal in December and January with some of the coldest temperatures we have ever seen in this area. We had the best crop of broccoli and cauliflower we have ever had about ready to be cut in mid-December when the temperature plunged into the teens for almost a month and killed all of our plants. Only the garlic survived and it has been really slow to grow compared to past years. The temperatures were also really hard on our Soldier Fly Worms and our numbers are minimal at this time.

Fried pickles we made using the last jar of our pickles from the 2017 year

On the positive side though, we sold every single bag of dried peppers that came from the final pepper harvest of the season! I cannot believe the response we got across the country. We sold 20+ bags through our Ebay store and have shipped everywhere from New York to California. We may even have a bigger following nationwide now than we do here locally in Pleasant View.

We also decided to list some of our homemade jellies and jams just to see what everyone thought about them and again the response has been overwhelming through our Ebay store. We are amazed that so many of you are willing to try our products and help support our growing farm! The feedback we have received on all of our sales has been very positive and very helpful in helping us maximize customer service and decide which products to focus on. We really want to thank our neighbor, Donna, who got us hooked on Violet Jelly. That is the jelly that got it all started and continues to be our top seller!

Spring was very wet and impacted our planting window. We planted a bit later this year as winter decided to hang on longer than usual. On April 15, which is typically the last frost date for Tennessee and when you can safely start planting, it was snowing. Frosts continued through April 20 before we got a break from the cold. But the rains kept us from cultivating the dirt. Even once we started planting, we only planted sections at a time as the rain kept forcing us to stop. We also planted some new fruit trees on the farm to go with our apple trees, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries that are already in place. Blueberry and raspberry production was up this Spring!

We invested a lot more into the farm this year, buying more seed starting supplies like germination domes, heating pads and grow lights to help with the difficult sprouting of hot peppers seeds. We also added fencing for our tomato rows which makes things a lot easier, but did set back our funds a bit. At least all those things can be used over and over in the future. We more than doubled our total number of hot peppers this year. We also got business cards and signs made for the Roadside Stand, as well as t-shirts for us to wear when we work. We have had several requests for shirts so we will likely get extras the next time we order and will offer them to our customers.

Pepper seed sprouting went well. The grow light made a huge difference and we had some good looking plants when the weather warmed. For the first time ever, we had issues with the plants getting sunburned with even the least amount of natural sunlight. This happened before we got the grow light and again after we had used the grow light. Growth was stunted for a while, but they survived and we set over 250 Devil's Tongue, Ghost, Scoprion and Carolina Reaper plants in the ground when the weather finally gave us a break the first week of June.

But nature wasn't done with us yet. Two days after we planted the peppers huge thunderstorms moved through our area, dumping three inches of rain in 30 minutes. The farm was flooded and most of our peppers were carried away. Some were picked up from the surrounding yard and replanted. Even the markers for our rows were gone so we are not even sure which peppers remain. We lost over 90% of our crop and all of our new Devil's Tongue peppers. It is disheartening, but we do still have 25+ Ghost Peppers and two rows of Carolina Reapers so all is not lost. Some of the other peppers are struggling after the event, but nearly all sweet peppers, Jalapenos, Cayennes and Habaneros survived.

Our corn and squash also took a beating during that first storm, which was followed up by two other storms that were nearly as bad, both dumping two inches of rain in an hour. The corn was flattened and the squash broken at the ground. The corn is still alive though so we hope to salvage that. Our tomatoes took a hit, but still look fair and have some huge green tomatoes that look like they could ripen any day. Our beans are doing great and are the biggest plants we have ever had! We picked three gallons of green beans two days ago and have several healthy rows of black beans growing pods hanging all over them.

We also started a CSA Program this year, which has been slow to get going, but we do have some people enrolled and we are excited to get them some vegetables starting in July. The Roadside Stand should also be open in the next few weeks. We will be open on Friday afternoons this year as that is when we had the most business last season. Be looking for info on that coming very soon. We will also be bringing jelly and jam, along with a few plants, to the stand this year. We also plan to host Veggie Sales near the farm every couple of weekends in July, August and September.

Thanks again to all who have supported our little farm! We are so grateful that you would consider us for veggies, canned goods and other services. We may have taken a beating with this weather, but we will keep going and have plenty of things to offer in the coming months and we hope you will give it a try! Thanks!!
